1. Grading reports and certificates. These are important documents when buying loose diamonds. This certificate should specify the colour, cut, carat and clarity of the diamonds for sale. It should also confirm the size and shape of the diamond. As well as all the good bits, the report should clearly specify any imperfections in the diamonds. This report is essential if you are thinking of selling the diamonds again. If you are planning to have the diamonds incorporated into jewellery then you may choose to have a new report covering all the stones in the piece.

2. Diamond appraisals. The diamond market moves, so an appraisal will not give you an exact value, but this is an important document for insurance purposes. Any diamond appraisal should be independent of the seller. If it is an in house diamond appraisal then there is a greater a chance of bias as it is in the companies interest to value the diamonds as high as possible.

3. Confirmation of origin. Although all diamonds have a value, some are tainted by their origin. The campaign against blood diamonds has gained a lot of support in recent years and these diamonds have become harder and harder to resell. Blood diamonds are those considered to be mined in war torn areas where the revenue is used to fuel further wars and crimes. These diamonds are also mined with out consideration of basic human rights and many of the workers are forced to work for little or no return.
Taking into account these three points should ensure that you are buying the best quality diamonds you can afford and that they will hold their resale value as well as any others on the market.
